Live Session | Houdini & FX: Blowing Things Up! – 16th September 2016
VFX have come a long way. Looking back at some of the ways things were blown up, destroyed, and or simulated, is not only amazing but also a testament to how far graphics have come. Don’t get me wrong, there is definitely something magical about how things were done in the past. For example, in that iconic spaceship arrival sequence in the original Independence Day film (you know… the one that showcased those awesomely thick and volumetric stream louds- as it was breaking through the earth’s atmosphere) that was a “Special Effect”. Yup, that effect (along with most of the others in the film) was actually done “in camera” and “physically” happened.
Basically, the SFX crew on the film geniusly poured condensed milk into a tank of water (while filming it from below) to create that masterpiece. Pretty cool, huh? But these days, you could get the same thing with a talented artist (or three), and an amazing off-the-shelf software like Houdini (that’s really good at generating volumetric fluid-dynamic simulations). However, let’s be clear; we will always have the Michael bays of the world (who make it their life’s mission to strap a ton of TNT to damn near anything just to blow it up good). But when it comes to the crazy- and off the wall abstract -digital effects being created these days, there’s only so much you can do with SFX.
In anticipation of our next session, we decided to go all out. Instead of making this your typical one-on-one session with a seasoned artist, we assembled our own trifecta of top tier VFX artist; to discuss the ins and outs of workflow, process, and cutting edge techniques/technology. This panel will focus on the current state of visual effects and what it’s like to work in an always evolving field.
Saber Jlassi (of Blizzard Entertainment), Keith Kamholz (Senior FX TD from Double Negative), and Shawn Lipowski (lead TD at Psyop) will be engaging us during this wonderful exchange. Again, this session is for anyone who wants to get a better idea of what VFX artists really do. So if you are interested in blowing something up, or creating a cool psychedelic energy field (a-la Doctor Strange), then this is the session for you.
As always, this live session will take place this Friday, September the 16th at 12:00 PM (PDT).
