Making of YUANFEN (2018) – Animated Short Film

CG Animated short film “Yuanfen” tells the story of a young orphan who is lead on a journey through China to be united with her parents to-be.

Directed by Amanda Sparso. Produced at the School of Visual Arts.

Yuanfen is a CG animated short film and senior thesis that I directed & produced during my time at SVA. I was responsible for story, layout, environment/prop modeling, shading and texturing, lighting, rendering and compositing. Aside from leading the art direction on my film, I also had the opportunity to direct and manage a team of 30 artists across all stages of the pipeline.

Besides getting to tell a story that is close to my heart, this project pushed me to learn more than I thought possible in such as short amount of time. Before making this film, I knew nothing about shading, lighting or compositing. However, thanks to my mentors, I learned new skill sets that I didn’t think I was capable of doing while better familiarizing myself with Mari, ZBrush, and Nuke.
